What are hot and cold packs?

Hot and cold packs are basic techniques for relieving pain, reducing inflammation and helping the body recover faster. Choosing the right one helps you get the most from the treatment. Let’s look at the benefits of each and when to use them.

Cold packs

Suitable for:

  • Acute injuries, such as a sprained ankle, bruising or a torn ligament
  • Reducing inflammation, i.e. pain with swelling, redness and heat
  • Reducing pain and inflammation after exercise
  • Reducing swelling in the first 24–48 hours after an injury

How to use:

  1. Use an ice pack or cold gel pack wrapped in a thin towel
  2. Apply to the affected area for 15–20 minutes
  3. Repeat every 2–3 hours as needed

Precautions:

  • Do not apply cold directly to the skin, as it may cause cold burns (frostbite)
  • Avoid applying cold for too long, as it may reduce blood circulation

Hot packs

Suitable for:

  • Chronic muscle pain
  • Muscle aches and tightness from various causes, such as sitting at work for long periods
  • Increasing blood circulation and stimulating tissue recovery
  • Reducing pain from osteoarthritis or chronic pain

How to use:

  1. Use a hot pack, hot water bottle or a towel soaked in warm water
  2. Apply to the desired area for 15–20 minutes
  3. Can be used 2–3 times a day

Precautions:

  • Avoid using heat on acute inflammation, as it may increase swelling
  • Do not apply a hot pack directly to the skin; wrap it in a cloth for protection
